Description
The Kansas Native Plant Society was founded in 1978 as the Kansas Wildflower Society and renamed in 2004 to reflect more accurately “the spectrum of plants we study and promote and to put more focus on our indigenous flora”.
KNPS’s many activities include:
- educating the public about Kansas plants
- sponsoring wildflower walks
- teaching plant identification
- publishing a quarterly newsletter, a wildflower growing guide, booklet of resources for plant identification, a gardening with natives fact sheet, and an invasive plant fact sheet
- running the “prairie patch program” that awards participants for success in plant identification
- presenting formal awards to those individuals and organizations that complement its mission through education, research, or the use of native plants in the landscape
- awarding scholarships to students conducting research on native plants
- running an excellent, informative web site
